St. Peter's is happy to support Scouting, because Scouting builds character and teaches devotion to God in an environment that provides wholesome fun under the guidance of strong adult roles. Scouting also has a history of turning out boys and girls who go on to become responsible and productive members of society. As proof of the Church's interest in Scouting, each diocese usually has a Committee on Scouting. The Archdiocese of New York's Committee is based in Kingston. This Committee oversees the awarding of the various Scouting emblems and medals the Church sponsors—the religious equivalent of merit badges.
The pastor is happy to do his part in helping young scouts work toward earning these awards. He is also happy to write letters of support or recommendation to any scouts who practice their faith and who seek to earn the highest awards Scouting offers—the Eagle Scout award for boys and the Gold Award for girls.
